WHAT IS SHIFT?
Humankind is defined by shifts in perspective, a necessary catalyst for inspiring action.TEDxSFU: Shift aims to recognize, characterize and question our ideas, philosophies and environments. Uniting societal leaders in a focused unearthing of shifting paradigms. Each shift represents a clarified vision, and crystal clear alternative to a life-altering decision. By pulling together the fibres that compose epiphanies, we seek to evoke breakthroughs in and throughout our communities.

TEDxSFU 2017 encourages community members to shift their filter, take-on an objective lense, and step outside the bounds of habitual action. By listening to the experiences of our speakers and empathizing with their defining insights, we urge communities to breakthrough relics of thought and take action towards an empowered future.

TEDxSFU is an independently organized TEDx conference with an organizing committee made up of Simon Fraser University alumni and students. We are all volunteers dedicated to the TEDx mantra of “ideas worth spreading”.

Allanah Mooney

Allanah owns Lionheart Productions in Vancouver, Canada. She has over 20 years experience in strategy, storytelling and social change. Her documentary web series, Making a Comeback, now in development and production, is designed to reduce mental health stigma and transform the understanding and treatment of trauma, despair, and suicide.

Andy Bird

Andy Bird, 27 years old. A First Nations from Montreal Lake Cree Nation (Saskatchewan) who overcame homelessness at 14, a shelter at 15, living in over 25 homes, transferring to 7 schools, having been raised by a single deaf mother and influenced by an alcoholic father to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a professional wrestler, and paying it forward through a non-profit organization called The Bird's Nest Society, aiming to assist First Nations youth like Andy to pursue their dreams.

Denise Quesnel

Denise Quesnel is a researcher of the immersive realities, specifically the creation and design of virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) content and interfaces for profound emotional shifts, like awe and wonder.

Elim Chu

Elim Chu is currently a freelance fashion stylist and consultant who advocates for making conscious choices while promoting women led businesses and brands. She can be found at www.elimchu.com.

Glen Tibbits

Glen Tibbits is currently the Canada Research Chair in Molecular Cardiac Physiology and a Professor at Simon Fraser University.

Mark Friesen

Mark Friesen is the consulting manager at Vantage Point, where he assists not-for-profit organizations throughout BC with strategic planning, governance, and capacity building.

Mark Groves

Mark is a Human Connection Specialist - an emotional translator, writer, speaker and coach. Mark helps people understand their emotional matrix and how to master themselves and their words. His clients range from individuals and couples, to businesses and leaders.

Maureen Fitzgerald

Maureen F. Fitzgerald, PhD, JD, LLM, BComm is a Gender Diversity Advisor and the author of several provocative books. Her motto is: Sharing the right ideas at the right time can change the world. Peter-Paul Van Hoeken

Peter-Paul is the founder and CEO of FrontFundr, a crowd-finance based investment platform. He also serves as a Director on the National Board of the Private Capital Markets Association of Canada (PCMA) and an Advisor of the National CrowdFunding Association Canada (NCFA).

Philip J. Oosthuizen

Philip J. Oosthuizen is currently the national academic director of the Enreach Education drama programme in Shanghai, creative director of the Educational Theatre Association China Chapter, and recently obtained his Masters in Education from the University of Nottingham.

Vincent Andrisani

Vincent Andrisani is currently an instructor at Simon Fraser University who focuses on sound, popular music, and urbanism. His research in the city of Havana, Cuba challenges us to rethink our understanding of urban development by simply listening to the everyday sounds that surround us.
