Every month, the Santa Clara Branch Library hosts a TED discussion group where we
get together and view a set of TED and TEDx videos focusing on a central theme, followed by a discussion afterwards. Future topics and videos can and will be chosen by the group. Have a favorite TED talk? Share it! Have a topic you want to discuss? Let us know! This group follows the mission of the TED organization; a "community welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world." Come be a part of an engaging and welcoming discussion where you don’t have to read the book before you attend!
This month, in conjunction with the opening of our library's new maker space, we'll be discussing maker culture, inventions and creativity! After the talks and a short discussion, we'll get a first hand demonstration of the new 3D printer and a tour of our new space!
Below are the TED Talks we'll be watching and discussing:
Steve Johnson: The Playful Wonderland Behind Great Inventions - TEDStudio 2016
Jay Silver: Hack a Banana, Make a Keyboard! - TEDSalon NY2013
Other talks about Creativity and the Maker Movement:
Steve Johnson: Where Goof Ideas Come From - TEDGlobal 2010
Catarina Mota: Play with Smart Materials - TEDGlobal 2012
Adam Grant: The Surprising Habits of Original Thinkers - TED2016
Danit Peleg: Forget Shopping, Soon You'll be Downloading Your Clothes - TEDYouth 2016

Comments: This was our biggest event yet! We combined the Ted Talks discussion group with a demonstration of our new 3D printer, which brought in a number of new and inquisitive patrons of all ages! The TED talks chosen were kid-friendly and fun for any age to learn from. Attendees particularly enjoyed Jay Silver's talk on his Makey Makey circuits and the fun things people have done with them! It was a great event and people left with smiles and inspiration!
