Theme: Perceptions and Perspectives: Unvoiced, Unnoticed, and Unparalleled

Every individual has a unique perception of their surroundings, their lives and the world, and this vision differs from person to person. Also, every person has his or her distinctive perspective towards certain objects and issues. It is exactly the diversity of people and their perceptions that enrich every community. However, sometimes these valuable voices are unheard; even some members do voice their perceptions out, the perceptions are largely unnoticed. In this event, we will let unvoiced perceptions be voiced, and make unnoticed but exceptional ideas flow. Imagine an event full of insightful perceptions and novel perspectives!

JIAWEI TANG

Hi, I am Tang, Jiawei (Malcolm) from Class1, Grade 12. In the past US election season, you probably all heard a little about candidates’ debates and speeches here and there. Maybe not as important today, but through the ubiquitous medium of TV they once meant life or death, swim or sink for countless politicians. My talk will focus on two well-known US presidents, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton, and examine the key role TV played in their legendary political rise. Their stories, however, are more than a litany of dry political events. Punctuated by historically significant video clips that are also often hilarious, my tale, I hope, will offer a light-hearted respite from the seriousness that can usually pervade such talks. Personally I am well versed in this topic. Aside from my keen interest in history and politics generally, I have an “addiction” to watching speeches and debates.

YIFAN ZHANG

My name is Yifan Zhang from Class 2, Grade 11, and you can call me Diana. As most young Chinese people, I am the only child in my family, loved by the most wonderful parents in the world who have been supported me with all their heart since the beginning of my life. I am “famous” in school for my current score in SAT and the “brave” act of shaving all my hair off for bet with Curly Xie now; I used to be “famous” for relatively high GPA and the efforts I devoted in the FIRST robotics competition. In short, you can always hear different stories about me from different people with something true and something not. But I want to tell you a true experience about me that helped to shape my character and my view of the world. When I viewed this experience in retrospect, I realized maybe other people would also have such confusion in personal relationship: what specifically should I do to let people like me? Am I too hot or too cold, too close or too far away? Should I show my true self or hide it behind a mask? Why are other people popular but not me? These will all be answered in my speech.

This is Yitao from G12,who is —— just 18, idealistic, a feminist, a fanfiction writer going to UK to study Literture, maybe and most importantly here——a Harry Potter Reader. Have you ever wondered why the Harry Potter stories, as a set of Children’s book, has gained immense popularity around the globe in various age groups? Where does its enchantment sprang from? In my speech, I’m going to approach this question by tracing certain plots back to their original sources of inspiration. What is the archetype of the prophecy and its significance? Together we’ll dig into the text to explore the power of a children’s book. To those who are not already familiar with the story——don’t worry, the speech doesn’t require pre-knowledge of the subject. Just relax and follow plots and thoughts gradually unfolded, you’ll surely get a new perspective of seeing literature. Just remember, none these works stands alone, and never underestimate.

You hear people saying Asian students are especially good at earning high scores, but do you know good academic achievements sometimes hurt Asian students in college admission? You believe domestic violence against women are common and brutal, but how you will react when you hear a large number of men are suffering from domestic violence? Reverse discrimination is common in every facet of the society with little attention paid to it. I hope my talk can inspire you to consider some normal issues in life with a new perspective.
