TEDxABQSalon | The Future of Medicine will be an evening dedicated to exploring New Mexico’s most fascinating ideas that support the theme of “What if…”

What if New Mexico was the best place to practice medicine? We will take a look at how this would look and feel as our speakers take a deep dive into topics such as research and prevention, medicine ecosystems for providers, and technology in healthcare. These extraordinary voices will unlock imaginations as new ideas are presented to challenge the way we think of medicine and to embrace its exciting future in New Mexico.

Deborah Helitzer, ScD

Population Health Leader
Dr. Deborah Helitzer is a professor and the founding dean of the University of New Mexico College of Population Health. She received her doctorate from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health where she studied the barriers to malaria chemoprophylaxis in pregnant women in Malawi. She has been a faculty member at UNM since 1995. The UNM College of Population Health began its new Bachelor’s of Science in Population Health in the fall of 2016. This program seeks to meet the growing demand for a new workforce, one that can meet the needs of health system reform, which will include, in addition to health providers, experts in behavioral economics, data analytics, and the incorporation of health technology into community health and wellbeing.

Harvey White, MD

Cardiologist
For the past 30 years, Dr. White has dedicated himself to direct patient care, clinical research, and leadership activities designed to improve both individuals’ lives and our healthcare delivery system. Building on a career in interventional cardiology, including the treatment of heart attack and stroke patients, Dr. White has found that a “fix-it” approach to healthcare may have limited long term impact on the health of individuals or their communities. Turning his attention to the importance of prevention in health, Dr. White founded Vessel Health – a pioneering medical enterprise focusing on lifestyle solutions to the achievement of cardiovascular well-being. This journey has yielded many lessons – some of which are simple on the surface but challenging to adopt.

Ivan Pupulidy, PhD

Accident Investigator
Dr. Pupulidy is the Director of the Office of Learning at the US Forest Service. Over the last decade, he has helped the Forest Service and other organizations accept learning as a principle value. He has also developed a new approach to the review of accidents and incidents, which has been accepted by the US Forest Service and replaced the Serious Accident Investigation Process. Unlike other accident protocols, the “Learning Review” is specifically designed to understand human actions in complex adaptive systems.

Ries Robinson

Healthcare Technology Innovator
Ries Robinson is an engineer, doctor, inventor and entrepreneur. Dr. Ries Robinson has more than 20 years of experience in noninvasive optical measurement technology. He currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of Medici Technologies. His inventions have yielded more than 60 United States patent applications, and he has co-authored several peer-reviewed technical articles.
