TEDxUTK | TED

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Annette Mendola

Philosophy and Medicine

Annette Mendola received a PhD in Philosophy, concentrating in Medical Ethics, from UT in 2003. Prior to graduate school, she worked in the psychiatric inpatient ward of a small county hospital in upstate NY. She taught Philosophy, primarily applied ethics, as a lecturer at UTK prior to taking a position as Director of Clinical Ethics at UTMCK in August of 2011. She has given talks and workshops on an array of topics in practical philosophy to a variety of audiences. She is married to another philosopher, John Nolt. Together, they have 3 adult children.

Baker Donahue

Entrepeneurship

Baker Donahue is a Junior at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville majoring in Communication Studies and minoring in Entrepreneurship. While at UT, Baker has started his own student organization, acquired four internships and founded his own company. Currently he works as an intern for AC Entertainment and the Knoxville Entrepreneur Center. He is also continuing the expansion of his company, In With The Old. Since its founding, In With the Old has been mentioned in several prestigious magazines, won one pitch competition and has expanded to other universities. Baker has a strong passion for entrepreneurship and believes that it is a necessary skill for all undergraduates.

Colleen Cruze

Sustainable Dairy Farming

A century ago, O.H. and Ida Belle Cruze milked cows and sold butter and buttermilk from a one horse wagon to residents of Knoxville, Tennessee. Today, Jersey cows graze the natural pastures growing along the fertile banks of the French Broad River in Knox County, Tennessee and grandson, Earl Cruze, and great granddaughter, Colleen Cruze, continue the family’s dairy tradition.

Elias Attea

Gardening and Education

Elias Attea (pronouns: he/him/his) had been a Pellissippi State’s Good Food for All! AmeriCorps VISTA and Academic Specialist with UTK’s University-Assisted Community Schools (at Pond Gap Elementary) in Knoxville, TN from 2014 until 2016. In that time, Elias managed Pond Gap Elementary School’s educational school garden initiative (the former Pellissippi State Edible Schoolyards Project). This initiative, with its fourth-acre educational and production garden, was intended to provide food and urban agriculture education for school and surrounding community. As of current, Elias Attea is a farm caretaker, spiritualist, substitute teacher, and writer living in Buffalo, NY.

Eric Wade

Robotics and Rehabilitation

Dr. Eric Wade is an assistant professor of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He worked previously as a postdoctoral researcher in the Motor Behavior and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory, of the Division of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy of the University of Southern California (USC) under the guidance of Prof. Carolee J. Winstein, and was also a member of the Interaction Laboratory in the Department of Computer Science under the guidance of Prof. Maja Mataric'. Dr. Wade received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (ME) from MIT in 2007, where he was advised by Prof. Harry Asada. He received a dual MS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and ME from MIT in 2004, and his BS in ME from MIT in 2000. Dr. Wade's research interests include wearable health monitoring, biological signal processing, motor learning and rehabilitation, robotics, mechatronics, and system dynamics.

Leigh Willis

Comics and Public Health

Dr. Leigh A. Willis is a Behavioral Scientist in the Health Communication Science Office in the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. His broad research interests include Health Communication, Sexual Risk, Mental Health, Violence Prevention, Health Disparities, Intervention Development, Health Communication and Evaluation. His research experiences include a broad range of settings, research methods and studies. Dr. Willis has presented his work at numerous conferences ranging from The American Public Health Association to San Diego Comic-Con and his work has appeared in a several journals ranging from American Journal of Public Health, Social Science and Medicine, Journal of Black Studies, Suicide and Life Threatening Behavior and Social Theory and Health. Dr. Willis work focuses on the use of technology and other innovative means of educating the public.

Rachel Milford

Craft and Community

The Cattywampus Puppet Council first convened during the summer of 2014 when good friends Rachel Milford and Shelagh Leutwiler came together one afternoon with the desire to create a little magic in Knoxville. On that hot, muggy afternoon, these two ladies sculpted their first puppet head together, and the magic was born. The mission of the Cattywampus Puppet Council is to craft community and play through puppets. We strive to do this through creating shows, workshops, and puppet parades, involving members of the community of all ages and backgrounds in this process. We hope to foster dialogue, laughter, wonder, and healing along the way.
