Theme: Res Novae: The Power of Innovation

The Woodside Priory School's TEDx Club will be hosting its second TEDx event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on March 17th, 2017 (Friday). The theme of this year's event is, “Res Novae: The Power of Innovation”. Speakers will share ideas on how Innovation has impacted, and will change lives for the betterment of society.

David Evan Harris

Chancellor’s Public Scholar, UC Berkeley, Haas School of Business Executive Director and Founder, Global Lives Project Research Director, Institute for the Future

David Evan Harris is a mixed media sociologist. In 2004, he founded the Global Lives Project, a video library of life experience around the world produced by thousands of collaborating filmmakers, photographers and translators. The Global Lives Project has been exhibited as a video installation in museums, galleries, public spaces and schools around the world, including the Smithsonian, United Nations University, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA). David previously worked at the White House Council on Environmental Quality and the Office of Management and Budget. He studied Sociology at the University of São Paulo (M.S., 2008) and Political Economy of Development and Environment at UC Berkeley (B.A., 2003). He speaks English, Portuguese, Spanish and French.

Kawai Lai

Vice President of NAIS

Kawai Lai is the Vice President of Innovation Initiatives at the National Association of Independent Schools, a non-profit serving over 1,800 schools and 730,000 students across the country and abroad. In her role as a key member of the innovation team, she helps schools reimagine education, build capacity to innovate, and share stories of the authentically new. Prior to a career in education, Kawai spent over a decade in consulting and technology, implementing large scale technology systems with Deloitte, working in different industries including healthcare, biotech, and aerospace. After Deloitte, she joined the founding team of an ed tech start-up, Education Elements, where she worked with the most forward-thinking district and charter schools across the country. Ms. Lai received her MBA from the Haas School of Business from the University of California, Berkeley.

Why is Silicon Valley so innovative? Why is Israel driving disruption? These questions kept me awake at night so much so that I spent 6 months researching the new innovative spirit that exists in the world. Partnering with Carnegie Mellon SV, and others, I found easily digestible insight for people, corporation, and countries that I laid out in this Tedx Talk.

Sharon Marzouk

Founder of TechyKids.com

Sharon Marzouk is the Founder of Techykids.com, a website that provides learners and teachers resources, robotics kids and online curriculum and courseware. Sharon is an avid technology and robotics educator in Silicon Valley, with years of experience teaching kids of all ages. Sharon was the Technology Teacher for Woodland School for four years and developed the Technology program for Kindergarten through 8th grade. With a passion for design thinking. She has led many robotics programs for kids, from Wizbots to being a mentor at Hack the Future. An active yearly exhibitor and presenter at Bay Area Maker Faire and the Robot Block Party. She partnered with Willow Garage to develop and lead the PR2 program at The Tech, an exhibit to teach kids how to program the $400K research robot. She plans to continue growing TechyKids.com to encourage robotics education and provide resources, products and educational material to kids and parents.
