In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

Catherine Wang

My name is Catherine Wang. For the past four years, I have had two main obsessions: studying the applications of computer science, and attempting, rather tortuously, to write poetry. After reading the works of Isaac Asimov, I became fascinated with the immense theoretical possibilities of artificial intelligence. There, in the liminal space between science and art, my two obsessions merged. In this year's TEDx, I will be exploring the capacity for language in artificial intelligence systems. In terms of creating realistic, conversational machine programs capable of communicating with humans, where were we, where are we now, and where are we heading?
