Choir and A Cappella
Performers
Choir and A cappella has a long tradition as an extracurricular activity at Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong. The Choir will be performing "Don't Stop Believin" by Journey during the intermission, and the A Cappella will be performing two pieces; a mashup of “Thinking out loud” by Ed Sheeran and “I'm not the only one” by Sam Smith as well as “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson.
"Don't Stop Believin" is a song about working hard to achieve your dreams in this world, and earning that fresh start as a blank page.
The mashup of “Thinking out loud” and “I'm not the only one” is a long song where two person finally comes together and decide to start their love story full of mysteries and romance from a blank page.
“Breakaway” is a song about learning how to breakaway from all the hardships chaining us, spreading our wings, and flying to an utopia. To a blank page where we write our own destinies, a blank page where we write our own stories.
Flag Dance
Performers
Flag dance is a traditional Chinese dance which is closely linked to the world-famous fan dance. Moved in perfect synchronization to the music, the flags seem hypnotizing to the audience. The flag dance performers from Li Po Chun are members of the extracurricular activity “Lion Dance” who want to dive deeper into Chinese culture and discover a new way of creative expression. The flag dance team had their first performance at the Chinese Cultural Evening in February 2017. Based on the positive and amazed reactions of the audience, TEDxLPCUWC will give them the stage to share traditional Chinese culture in a modern context.
Speech and Drama
Performers
Speech and Drama is a part of LPC Quan Cai program and directed at all the dramatastic theater-lovers in LPC. Throughout the year, Speech and Drama students having been exposed to a variety of exercises and themes, including trust, dramatization, body consciousness, voice, dialogues and improvisational theater. Speech and Drama participated in the HK Speech Festival 2016, which was an enjoyable and exciting experience resulting in the performers receiving multiple awards.
For today’s performance, the Speech and Drama crew will ask the audience to break the fourth wall and engage with a short, improvised performance. While having prepared some forms, the performers will be basing their response entirely on input from the audience. Hence, no prepared acts, no script; a blank page…
Clive Lee

World-Record Holder + Racer + Adventurer
Dr. David Gething is an enthusiastic world traveler, adventurer and racer. Specializing in long-distance events, he has competed in numerous marathons including the famed Boston Marathon and Ironman triathlons. David won the World Marathon Challenge in 2015, running 7 marathons in 7 continents in 7 days which originated in Antarctica and ended in Australia. David set two new world records in the process and wrote a book (“Relentless: Seven Marathons, Seven Continents, Seven Days”) about his experience of this unique and unparalleled global expedition. As an active supporter of a number of charities and community projects David has raised significant donations through his races and expeditions.
José Mari Bayuga
Student Speaker
José Mari Bayuga is a student from Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong. Coming from Philippines, he used to be the youth camp director for the summer national youth camp of SOS children’s villages and President of student council in his former school, BTS. He is passionate in trail running, hip-hop dancing and singing. Yet unknown by many, at the age of 5, Jose was brought to SOS village, an organization taking care of abandoned, destitute and orphaned children requiring family-based child care. Changing from village life to a youth facility, Jose got exposed to different people with various addictions. He eventually got addicted himself; to computer games, pornography, smoking, alcohol, and even tried marijuana several times. After years getting into the cycle of re-addiction and quitting, he found a way to break the loop of addiction and is now dedicated to advocate the approaches to control one’s addictions with his experience.
Co-founder of Rooftop Republic (Social Entrepreneur)
Pol Fàbrega is the co-founder of Rooftop Republic, a social enterprise dedicated to revolutionize the food system by empowering people to grow and reconnect with their own food. Within the first two years of operations, Rooftop Republic has transformed over 22,000 square feet of underused space into 20 urban farms across Hong Kong and has organised more than 200 events around organic farming and sustainable living.
Originally from Barcelona, Pol relocated to Hong Kong in 2012 where he has been pioneering the urban farming movement to help transform the way we grow, consume and think about food.
Ricky Tsui
Educator + Founder of Achievers Track
Ricky Tsui is the founder of Achievers Track and has been involved in the science education field for over 10 years since graduating from Purdue University (USA). He is currently the science consultant for Science Wonderland Center at Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children and Scientist-in-Residence. Ricky has taught in the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education Astronomy program and has conducted over 120 science camps, teaching over 20,000 students. As an innovative educator, Ricky used his extensive teaching experience to create new teaching kits to introduce science to students from a young age. Ricky and his team created card games to facilitate the teaching of astronomy, invented the system “Wind Matrix” to teach wind energy collection, as well as the patented science product “Paper Circuit” to teach electronics to young children in a new and easy way.
Siumi Maria Tam
Cultural Anthropologist
Siumi Maria Tam is a cultural anthropologist at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interests revolve around the construction of cultural identity in relation to social transformation, focusing on family and transnational migration, and gender and ethnic relations. In the past few years she has focused on interculturalism, and the change and continuity of tradition and selfhood among South Asian migrants in Hong Kong. Director of a four-year project "Multiculturalism in Action", she believes that anthropology is a powerful tool to raise intercultural sensibility, and hopes that the project contributes to eradicating social marginalization and ethnic discrimination in Hong Kong. She is editor of a series of books on the Indian, Nepali, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan communities in Hong Kong, and has just completed a documentary "Feeling South Asian" showcasing the cultural practices of and challenges faced by these communities.
Tomi Madarikan
Student Speaker
Tomi was born in England and moved back to her home country Nigeria at the young age of four. She is interested in performing arts and had played leading roles in seven consecutive school musicals during her years in primary and secondary school. From then onwards, Tomi has also ventured into poetry writing, acting, choreography, and script writing. With singing being her greatest passion, she is leading Choir as well as A cappella in her school. The primary source of her artistic inspirations is everyday events.
Tomi is currently attending Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong where she studies with students from over sixty different countries. This multicultural environment has made her realize the misconception on marginalized groups due to media misrepresentation. Identifying herself as a “young, black, African woman”, these issues affect her most personally.
