Theme: It's About Time

TEDxUWollongong 2016 is being held to coincide with the TEDWomen conference in San Francisco, and will include the broadcast of a fast-tracked TEDWomen speaker session. TEDxUWollongong’s theme will reflect that of TEDWomen: ‘It’s About Time’. It’s about how we use and value time; about how it’s time to change our approaches and attitudes; and it’s about how time has changed our past and will change our future.

Out of the Blue Singers

Out of the Blue acapella is a group of local women who gather together every Wednesday evening to sing together in four and three part harmonies. Out of the Blue has a wonderful inclusive attitude, and sing for pure enjoyment and positivity.

Charles Areni

Professor of Marketing

Charles Areni is a Professor of Marketing, recently appointed as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business at the University of Wollongong. With expertise in branding, brand portfolio management, and trademark protection, he is also co-author of the book 'The Other Glass Ceiling'.

Ika Lestari Damayanti

PhD student and educator

Ika Damayanti is in the final stages of completing her PhD at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Wollongong. An Indonesian teacher, Ika moved from Indonesia with her family to complete her research studies. Ika is a volunteer at the University’s children’s education activity centre, the Early Start Discovery Space and in 2016, Ika was judged the ‘People’s Choice’ in the Asia Pacific Final of the Three Minute Thesis competition.

Julia Quilter

Criminal justice law and reform

Associate Professor Quilter specialises in research and teaching on criminal law and criminal justice policy and reform, employing multi-disciplinary theoretical, doctrinal and empirical methods. Recent projects have examined criminal law responses to alcohol-related violence and ‘one punch’ fatalities and sexual assault, and the operation of public order laws and local council rules regulating the use of public space.

Lyn Phillipson

Creating dementia friendly communities

Dr Lyn Phillipson is an NHMRC-ARC Dementia Fellow at the University of Wollongong. She has a particular interest in the way that stigma associated with health conditions affects willingness to seek help and assistance from health and social services. Dr Phillipson is focused on projects which achieve immediate benefits for research participants and promote learning to improve health and social care policy.

Sako Dermenjian

Sako Dermenjian is a classical guitarist. He is Armenian, but lived in Syria, which his family left because of the civil war. They arrived in Wollongong, Australia in November 2014. Sako has gradually gained acclaim for his talent playing guitar, and he is now heavily booked as a performer.

Sharon Robinson

Biologist and Antarctic researcher

Professor Sharon Robinson is co-director of the Centre for Sustainable Ecosystem Solutions at the University of Wollongong. Her research investigates how plants obtain and use energy, and applying this knowledge to specific plant communities, including Antarctic mosses. With a multidisciplinary and multinational team, the impact of this research is far-reaching and has informed and changed the management and conservation of terrestrial plant communities in the Antarctic.
