Dr. Joe von Fischer
Professor in Biology
I’m a professor in Biology and faculty member in the Graduate Degree Program in Ecology. I’ve lived in FC for 13 years now! My wife (Colleen Webb) is also faculty in Biology. We have 4 kids.
The topic of my talk is how to create new systems for observing and managing environmental hazards. If there were a rattlesnake in your house, you could find it with your eyes or ears, and you’d know who to call to take care of it. In contrast, we are constantly discovering new types of pollutants emanating from surprising places and having effects on people that we are only just starting to understand. I will talk about my work with an NGO and Google Street View cars where we detected pollution on local scales and are changing the way that industries manage their infrastructure to manage leaks.
