TEDx Wexford 2016

The inaugural TEDx Wexford occurred in September 2016 entitled "Tomorrow Imagined". With great difficulty organisers whittled the speaker lineup to 10 speakers. Hosted in Wexford Arts Centre, the evening sparked what we hope will evolve and grow for TED enthusiasts in Wexford and beyond.

Diarmuid Lyng

Former Wexford hurling captain and Primary School Teacher

Diarmaid Lyng, a former Wexford hurling captain and Primary School Teacher, is regularly seen on TG4 discussing all issues GAA. Diarmaid also co-presented the popular sports radio show 'Off The Ball' on Newstalk. He has worked as a facilitator for the Soar Foundation, a Dublin based collective that encourages teenagers around the country to embrace the best version of themselves and ran the 'Facebook Free February' initiative last year. Diarmaid is also the subject of an RTÉ documentary coming out in October.

Frankie Gaffney

Author

Frankie Gaffney grew up in Dublin's North Inner-City. His first novel, Dublin Seven, was published to critical acclaim (and controversy) last year. He is currently undertaking research at Trinity College Dublin, analysing literature using linguistics, and trying to beat his addiction (to journalism).

Grace Gelder

Photographer

Grace Gelder is a London-based photographer and arts workshop facilitator. Since completing an MA in Documentary Photography, she has been photographing and facilitating workshops with a range of clients and groups, often collaborating with charities and organisations that support women’s empowerment and wellbeing. Since her Self Marriage unexpectedly went viral in 2014 she has been bringing her love of ritual, self-awareness and visual conversation into her work with a new understanding of what it means to be in front of a lens. Her photo-shoots promote acceptance of the body in all forms, and her private portrait commissions often utilise therapeutic techniques. Grace’s clients have included Tate, BBC and Wellcome Collection.

John Sweeney

John Sweeney is a social entrepreneur and kindness coach from Cork, Ireland. He is the founder and Chief Kindness Officer of Suspended Coffees, the global social movement that has positively impacted and changed millions of lives around the world. No stranger to difficult times in his life, John’s mission is to change society one act of kindness at a time. John is an international Speaker, Kindness Coach, and Storyteller. He’s an expert in building social connections for Brands, and has grown his own Suspended Coffees Facebook page to more than a quarter-of-a-million fans with an average weekly post reach of 1.5 million. John lives in Ireland with his wife and four beautiful children, who teach him as much about kindness as anyone else on the planet.

Mary Reynolds

Landscape Designer & Author of " The Garden Awakening"

Mary Reynolds strives to be a good listener. By listening carefully to her client and the land in question, she undertakes the design of gardens that marry the needs and wishes of the lands guardian with the needs and wishes of the land itself. With her roots in natural gardening theory, Mary seeks to create spaces that are healing, truthful and magical. She also encourages the clients to form their own relationship with the little piece of earth they are lucky enough to call their own, their gardens.A Chelsea flower show gold medal winner, Mary has designed gardens internationally for more than 17 years, including commissions in Kew Royal botanical gardens in London as well as occasional stints of garden television presenting for RTE and BBC. Mostly she spends her time growing two very magical wild children who are the stars of Mary’s garden.A feature length movie based on Marys true life story will be released in 2016.

Pat Falvey

Mountaineering Entrepreneur

As a world-renowned adventurer Pat has lead multi-lingual, multi-cultural teams into the highest, coldest, harshest, most remote and beautiful places on planet earth. Pat also lived with and studied over 20 tribes world-wide, from western man, to nomadic tribes in Africa, to the stone-age tribes in the jungles of West Papua New Guinea. From them, he has discovered fascinating similarities and traits in all of mankind: to challenge, to change, set goals, and to achieve them. Among these various tribes and cultures he has studied what exactly has driven man to succeed since the evolution of our species.

Patrick Sutton

Director of The Gaiety School of Acting

Patrick trained at Dartington College of Arts, graduating with a BA (honours) Theatre and received his MA (Screenwriting) from IADT. He is a former director of Wexford Arts Centre and of Team Educational Theatre Company. He has been director of The Gaiety School of Acting since 1993. He is a founder and director of Smock Alley Theatre-1662 and of Communicate, a communications company working at a senior level in industry, politics and the arts. He was a government appointee to the board of The Arts Council (1997-2005) The Irish Museum of Modern Art (2000-2005) and to Culture Ireland (2005-2009). He is board member of The Lisa Richards Agency and until recently was a member of the governing authority of The Dublin Institute of Technology.

Saffa Musleh

Saffa is a learning and development specialist with over a decade of experience in programme design, delivery, evaluation and management. After initially qualifying as a General Nurse in the United Arab Emirates, she moved to Ireland where her work experience panned across government and private sectors. She moved into the field of healthcare training through qualifying as a level 6 FETAC trainer and working with ETBs and FAS healthcare programmes. Her training experience culminated in managing the training needs of Ireland's leading homeware company Comfort Keepers - a company that joined the SODEXO family in September 2015. She started working with Comfort Keepers as an associate trainer in 2007 and was promoted to the position of Training and Business Development Manager in 2013. Senior Editor and Business Owner

Simon is Senior Editor at Irish Tech News, and also freelances for Sunday Business Post, The Southern Star, Dublin Globe and other publications. He has been based in Ireland for 20 years. He has founded three companies, and introduced one national sport to the country. Along the way he’s met a lot of great people in Ireland and enjoys working in and writing about the Irish Tech scene. Ulick Stafford

Survive Your Camp Author

Ulick Stafford PhD is a father, writer and inventor. Ulick was educated in chemical engineering at University College Dublin and University of Notre Dame. Ulick has worked as a researcher and manager in medical device and pharmaceutical industries. Dr Stafford has written many patents and research papers. Ulick is an experienced public speaker and long-time member of Toastmasters International. Ulick has earned the Distinguished Toastmaster Award. Using the nom de plume George Nicholas he wrote Survive your camp based on the application of lessons learned by concentration camp survivors after using the techniques to cope with problems in his own life. He also wrote Improve your Life, a book summarising three motivational classics. In his spare time Ulick grows grapes and makes wine and beer. Ulick also contributes to the debate on global warming. He has written blog articles, newspaper letters, filmed YouTube videos and contributed to radio and public-meeting discussions of the issue.
