In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

David Lang

Dr. David Lang is a Full Professor and Chair of the Economics Department at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). In addition, Dr. Lang routinely teaches various courses at UC, Davis, in the Economics, Statistics, and Mathematics Departments. Dr. Lang incorporates classroom experiments, group projects, and classroom participation into all of his courses where appropriate and believes that the primary goal as a teacher is to inspire the students to learn subject. Dr. Lang’s research interests reside most generally in the field of Applied Microeconomics with a specific focus on how and why individuals make the choices that they make as well as looking into the specific incentives that they face and how this might influence future outcomes. Dr. Lang received his BA in economics at Stanford University and both his MA and PhD in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis.

Ellen Davis

Ellen Davis is a senior studying Communication at UC Davis. As a board member for We Are Aggie Pride, Ellen has become very interested in the world of philanthropy and hopes to pursue a career in fundraising. We Are Aggie Pride (WAAP) is a student run philanthropy on the UC Davis campus that raises money for students in emergency need of financial aid. Ellen is also involved with the Rotaract Club at UC Davis, which focuses on community service and professional development. Additionally, she loves to bake in her free time; there is a rule in her apartment to always have baked goods available. Ellen particularly enjoys British themed pubs and eating Fish and Chips; if she could visit anywhere in the world, she would go back to London first.

Fong Tran

Fong Tran is currently the Director of Student Activities and Campus Life at the College of Alameda. He received a masters degree in Community Development at UC Davis, focusing on the experiences of youth of color in social media. Michael has personally hired more than 2,000 people and has interviewed tens of thousands. From this vantage point in the hiring process he has gleaned unique insight regarding who gets hired and why - and his findings may surprise you.

Mindy Romero

Mindy Romero is the founder and director of the California Civic Engagement Project (CCEP) at the UC Davis Center for Regional Change. Romero is a political sociologist and holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from UC Davis. Her research focuses on the intersection of political behavior and race/ethnicity. Romero has been invited to speak about civic engagement and political rights in numerous venues, including provided testimony to the National Commission on Voting Rights and the California Legislature. Her research has been cited in major news outlets, including the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Politico and the Huffington Post.

Ralph Washington Jr.

Ralph Washington, Jr. is a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow, and a second-year Ph.D. student in Entomology and Nematology. He is the Chair of the UC Davis Graduate Student Association, the Co-Chair of the UC Council of Student Body Presidents, and one of the leaders of the UC Davis Black Graduate and Professional Students Association. Through these endeavors, Ralph has had the convenient opportunity to pursue his commitments to both science and social justice. He will continue doing so during his future career as a research professor, by presenting science to low-income children. Ralph spends his free time reading books on myriad topics.

Rylan Schaeffer

Rylan is a fifth year computer science engineering and statistics double major, whose difficulty with choosing his major is reflected in his varied adventures at UC Davis, including teaching three student-led courses (Cryptocurrency Technologies, History of Computer Science, Davis Hacks), serving as ASUCD Controller and ASUCD Business and Finance Commission Chair, creating a new Academic Senate Policy while on the Chancellor's Undergraduate Advisory Board, winning DeVere's Monday Night Trivia and hosting a public affairs radio show on KDVS with no more than five confirmed listeners. He enjoys lifting weights to Enya at the ARC, has taken Steve Doten's suntanning class at Schaal every quarter since sophomore year, and according to his roommate, can win every argument, even when wrong.
