Theme: (e)Motion

People in the 21th century seem to permanently be on the move. They move and they are moved – be it by physically travelling from one place to the other, being sentimentally touched by a personal encounter or a global event, or by an innovative and state-of-the-art technology. There are cheaper and more ways for transportation, and a broader choice of communication channels and social media than ever before. Motion, emotion, e-motion – this year’s motto “(e)Motion” for the 2016 TEDxStuttgart conference can be interpreted in distinct ways. We wish for talks about moves and emotions, we hope to understand what drives individuals, societies or global organizations, we are keen on learning about the e-Mobility of the future. We can’t wait to share the inspiring stories of our speakers with the audience.

Amy Hamilton

Project Manager

Amy S. Hamilton is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) specializing in IT and telecommunications projects. She is originally from the United States of America, but has spent time working internationally in Europe and Asia. She was the Director of Social Media for the Project Management Institute Pikes Peak Regional Chapter in Colorado Springs and is currently a co-organizer for the PMI Stuttgart English Language Group. Amy uses basic project management techniques to plan and organize her daily life. She has taught as a Professor for PM tools at Colorado Technical University.

Damian Borth

Researcher

Dr. Damian Borth is the Director of the Deep Learning Competence Center at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Kaiserslautern and founding co­director of Sociovestix Labs, a social enterprise in the area of financial data science. Damian’s research focuses on large­scale multimedia opinion mining applying machine learning and in particular deep learning to mine insights (trends, sentiment) from online media streams. His work has been awarded by the Best Paper Award at ACM ICMR 2012, the McKinsey Business Technology Award 2011, and a Google Research Award in 2010. Damian currently serves as a member of the assessment committee for the Investment Innovation Benchmark (IIB) and several other steering­ and program committees of international conferences and workshops.

Fabian Neidhardt

Straßenpoet

Fabian Neidhardt ist Straßenpoet, Sprecher und Botschafter des Lächelns. Er spricht und schreibt, er erzählt Geschichten und arbeitet an der Kommunikation zwischen Menschen. Nach dem Volontariat zum Redakteur und Moderator beim Radio studierte er Sprechkunst und Kommunikationspädagogik an der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst Stuttgart. Derzeit absolviert er den Master im Literarischem Schreiben an der Universität Hildesheim. Auch in seinen Romanen geht es um die Frage, wie Menschen miteinander in Beziehung stehen und wie wir mit den Wundern und Katastrophen des Alltags zurechtkommen. Ansonsten arbeitet unter anderem für den SWR und gibt Führungen im Literaturmuseum der Moderne in Marbach am Neckar.

Heiko Mangold

Elektrotechniker

In der Automobilindustrie hat Heiko Mangold breite Erfahrung im Bereich Powertrain gesammelt. Der in Stuttgart und Paris studierte Elektrotechniker war an der Entwicklung eines seit mehreren Jahren in den USA in Serie befindlichen Antriebssystems für Elektrofahrzeuge beteiligt. Derzeit ist er bei einem Zulieferer in Stuttgart zuständig für künftige Elektroniksysteme für den Verbrennungsmotor – ein von Kostendruck, hohen Stückzahlen und immer schärfer werdenden Abgasnormen geprägter Bereich. Gelebt und gearbeitet hat er in den USA im Silicon Valley und in Südkorea in der Automobilindustrie sowie in einer Softwarefirma in Frankreich. Mit einer globalen Sicht beleuchtet er das Thema Elektrifizierung und setzt es in den Kontext der ganzheitlichen Energieversorgung.

Liz O'Riordan

Breast Surgeon

Liz O'Riordan is a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon in Ipswich, England. She has a PhD in Molecular Oncology, and her surgical training included a National Oncoplastic Fellowship at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London where she learned to reconstruct and reshape the breast and to improve cosmetic outcomes after cancer surgery. She is a member of the Women in Surgery committee at the Royal College of Surgeons, England, and was a keynote speaker at their 2016 national conference – “Confidence, Excellence and Feminism: not dirty words”. Outside of work, Liz is a triathlete, cyclist and loves baking. She is very active on social media, and was runner-up in the British Medical Association’s 2015 ‘Top Doctor on Social Media’ award. She uses Twitter to promote the role of women in surgery, educate people about breast cancer, and help plan her next sporting event.

Matthias Engel

Entwicklungsingenieur & Hobby-Astronom

Dr.-Ing. Matthias Engel ist seit Abschluss seiner Promotion an der Universität Stuttgart als Entwicklungsingenieur bei einem großen süddeutschen Technologiekonzern tätig. 2011 gründete er das Projekt "Sternenpark Schwäbische Alb", das sich für den Erhalt des prachtvollen Sternenhimmels auf der Alb und für umweltgerechte Beleuchtung einsetzt. Neben der Gesamtorganisation hat er sich auf das Thema Lichttechnik spezialisiert. Die ehrenamtliche und unabhängige Initiative wurde mit dem Umweltpreis 2012 des Landkreises und der Kreissparkasse Reutlingen ausgezeichnet. 2014 erreichte Engels Beitrag "Zielgerichtet beleuchten" den 3. Preis beim bundesweiten Energiewende-Wettbewerb der Sparkassen.

Sally Grayson

Musician & Artist

American indie blues rocker, artist and wanna be social activist, Sally Grayson, has been fascinated her whole life with the question of suffering. This journey has taken her around the world in search of those answers as she continues to wrestle honestly and authentically with these questions. Her medium is through the post-punkified Americana'n' roll band "Black Swift," as well as visually through collage, paint and found objects. In 2014 Black Swift released "The World Howls" which ranges in style from Tarantino road trip rock to Morricone, to Fugazi to Tom Waits. The album was released along with an art booklet with an artwork for each song. Black Swift is currently working on their next full length album to be released in 2017.

Solmaz Mohadjer

PhD Researcher

Solmaz Mohadjer wore shoes in bed as a child to be ready for a quick escape from earthquakes. Now as a geoscientist, she chases earthquakes and rockfalls with high precision measuring instruments. Together with her team, she works to detect and measure subtle movements and changes in Earth's surface and their implications for earthquake and rockfall hazards. Inspired by school children in mountain communities of central Asia, she started the initiative ParsQuake to bridge the information gap between scientists and the public in regions of high geohazards risk exposure. Her main aim is to make geohazards research results accessible to all and help those having fatalistic attitudes move toward taking positive actions to plan and prepare for future events. She is currently a PhD researcher in the field of natural hazards at the University of Tübingen.

Stephan Bruckmeier

Theater-Regisseur

Stephan Bruckmeier wurde 1962 in Wien geboren und lebt seit über 20 Jahren in Deutschland. Er realisierte weit über einhundert Theaterprojekte in Deutschland, Frankreich, Kenia, Mosambik, den Niederlanden, Österreich, Ungarn und den USA. Er wurde mit dem Josef Kainz Preis Wien, dem Karl Skraup Preis Wien, dem Kölner Theaterpreis, dem Baden-Württembergischen Jugendtheaterpreis und der Stuttgarter Ehrenmünze ausgezeichnet. Von 1998 bis 2008 war er im Leitungsteam des Theater Rampe Stuttgart, von 2000 bis 2004 Intendant des NÖ.Donaufestivals. 2006 eröffnete er den Stuttgarter Fernsehturm als Theaterspielort. Er ist regelmäßiger Gast bei den Stuttgarter Schauspielbühnen, dem Altonaer Theater Hamburg und den Burgfestspielen Jagsthausen. Seit 2003 arbeitet er in Afrika, 2009 gründete er das Hope Theater Nairobi mit regelmäßigen Gastspielen in Deutschland. Seit 2011 lebt er auch in Nairobi und beschäftigt sich intensiv mit der schwierigen Beziehung zwischen den Kontinenten Afrika und Europa.

Tina Weinmayer

Wochenendmutter

Tina Weinmayers Leben wird oft kommentiert. Sie verletze ihre karmischen Aufgaben. Und wenn sie sich eines Tages vorwirft, was sie getan hat? Was dramatisch klingt, ist eigentlich ganz einfach. Ein Paar trennt sich und einer zieht aus. Die gemeinsamen Kinder bleiben beim Vater. Eine Entscheidung, die grundsätzlich möglich ist. Dachte sie. Allen geht es gut damit, nur die Gesellschaft kommt an ihre Grenzen. Das geht doch einfach nicht. Und Tina Weinmayer beobachtet an sich selbst, dass sich die stetige Bewertung ihrer Umgebung auf ihr eigenes Denken auswirkt. Wie oft und wie sehr beeinflusst das Milieu unsere eigene Gedankenwelt? Wie viele unserer Gedanken sind nur unbewusst übernommene Glaubenssätze, Wertvorstellungen und oft wiederholte Vorwürfe? Fragen, die sich Tina Weinmayer stellt.

Yves Klett

Forscher

Yves Klett verdient seine Brötchen mit Falten von Papier. Er studierte Luft- und Raumfahrttechnik in Stuttgart, und erlag dort den Verlockungen des Origami in Gestalt gefalteter Hochleistungsstrukturen. Er hält einen Doktorgrad im Falten für Fortgeschrittene und leitet die Sandwichtechnologie-Gruppe des Instituts für Flugzeugbau der Universität Stuttgart, einer weltweit führenden Adresse für das Design und die Herstellung innovativer, origami-inspirierter Materialien. Diese eröffnen neue überraschende (und ästhetische) Möglichkeiten für zahlreiche Anwendungsbereich von der Raumfahrt bis zur Architektur. Darüber hinaus ist er Mitgründer des Start-Up Foldcore GmbH.
