TEDxKoreaUniversity is an independent student body in Korea University aiming to extend TED’s mission of exchanging ideas worth spreading in the field of technology, entertainment and design. Through our 5th event of TEDxKoreaUniversity, we want the audience break their frames by listening to the stories of our 6 speakers.

Dae Soo Marco Park

Did you know that if a mailbox is not used for three months, they are permanently removed? The artist, Dae Soo Park is trying to stop these mailboxes from being removed from the streets. In this world of the digital media, he is twisting the trend by going back to handwritten letters and analogue. Though people may seem to be connected with each other by social media, they don’t have someone who they can truly rely on. Here is the story of an artist trying to make the world more livable like the old days.

Dong Gu Lim

Master Principal of D.I.T Lab + Space Marketing Expert + architect.

Dong-gu Lim is the master principal of D.I.T Lab, which is the first and the only professional space marketer group. He is also an initiator of the concept called space marketing. Space marketing breaks the conventional idea of business, and merges various fields into the business area, including changed consumption trend and city environment. As an architect, he shows how space itself can boost our economy and be subject of business.

In spite of the brilliant product and idea, if it doesn't come true it will become worthless. WADIZ helps startups, small traders and social ventures to overcome their limits by a method called 'Crowd Funding'. The main motto being "A trusted company, can grow.", it provides a platform for enterprises that perhaps it won’t bring immediate results but certainly will in a long-term basis. WADIZ, as a partner of enterprises seeking for a stable growth, is in charge of guiding society into a better direction.

Jae Ho Yeom

President of Korea University.

In the 21st century, does a university student still have to be sitting behind a desk for education? In this changing world, what is a university and how should it be? The speaker has worked as a college professor for a long time and currently he is the president of Korea University. As the president, he has been contemplating about what a university and education should be like. For him, a university student is a pioneer who challenges and improves their own life as well as the society. By his own and unique definition of 'university', 'education' and 'pioneer', you will be able to think about your position as a university student in this world.

Si Doo Ryu

What's your own definition of 'food'? Perhaps you are influenced by the definition defined by the society. In the beginning, there was no specific concept of food. For example, sushi, which is now considered quality food, was labeled a piece of garbage in the western countries, just before 50 years ago. Then, how do you feel about 'insects'? Despite the high amount of nutritional value, environmental worth, and its own unique smell and texture, insects are often neglected as source of food. Until the day insects become a popular food source, Ryu Si Doo and his crew will keep on working on it.

Woon Ok Yeom

Originally, multiculturalism approaches us with a positive connotation. However, does Korea have true 'multi'-culturalism? Ultimately, multiculturalism views culture as a fixed object, and is an act of categorizing individuals based on their difference. We need to focus on the value as human beings, which overrun limitation of biological differences. Society should respect human rights, rather than merely accepting different cultures. Such change begins with learning history. Professor Yeom helps us to gain critical perspective towards the word multiculturalism through her lectures. Thus, from the lecture, we could ponder on solutions to our multiculturalism.
