Theme: Exploring the Limits

This event occurred on
June 16, 2016
Chelmsford, Essex
United Kingdom

This year we are looking at limits, be that limits of the human mind, human body or the physical world. We are looking for exciting talks on the limits of anything from the limits of engineering, to the limits of medicine. If there is an idea that needs to be shared and it links with our theme then we'd love to hear about it.

Chris Lee

During 40 years in the not-for-private-profit sector ‘pursuing a cause rather than a career’, the line between paid and unpaid work has become increasingly blurred for Chris Lee. After 15 years in international book publishing, his personal and professional life has developed through a series of time-limited projects – stepping stones to, his wife hopes, ‘a proper job’. When not advising charities and social enterprises on working well, he borrows good ideas from other people to share in his home county – Hertfordshire – where he organised the first Repair Cafés and Cash Mobs. Chris lives in no man’s land – the Hertfordshire / Cambridgeshire border – where he can be found running, singing, freecycling, blogging and telling bad jokes

Elliot is a real mixture of cultures, coming from an Argentinean mother and English father. Making the best of everything, Elliot claims he has the warmth of a South American and the manners of an Englishman. After almost losing everything, Elliot knew he had to change and change big time. From lying in his flat in Acton, west London wondering how he was going to pay his rent, how he was going to overcome this situation and find love again… thats when the next level of the journey began. Now happily married with a baby on the way, he loves tuning into Netflix to unwind when he wants down time while running his Strategy businesses.

Isabella Copeland

Isabella never thought she could compete with her class mates in this year’s TEDx speaking competition because one school friend’™s father had just returned from Antarctica with Andy McNab of BravoTwoZero fame€ but after finding a topic she was truly passionate about she realised it is not always what you are given in life but what you do with it that makes all the difference and that could not be more true for her or the subject of her talk this year.

Kelvin Marsh

Celebrating with the Man United team in Barcelona’s NouCamp Stadium when they just won the legendary Treble in 1999, which coincidentally was the day of my 30th birthday, was an unforgettable experience, as was celebrating with the British sailing team on the podium at the Sydney Olympics when they won 3 Gold and 2 Silver Medals. I feel truly privileged to have had these and many more great memories. But they come second place to seeing children develop new skills and grow in confidence – I mean that hand on heart! True fulfilment is seeing a shy kid grow in confidence by mastering a skill you taught them”.

Luke Mason

Luke is a media teacher and improviser from Southend. He certainly doesn’t claim to be an expert improviser as to do so would destroy the point and concept of improvisation but has used the skills he has learnt over 5 years of improvising successfully within his teaching practice. He is 6ft 5in, has size 15 feet and recently broke and dislocated his ankle after falling off his pennyboard. He already knows he shouldn’t have been on it. He knows he’s a silly boy. You’re more than welcome to sign his cast.

Matt Dawson

Matthew discovered a passion for endurance events later in life but those who knew him growing up are not surprised he has chosen this path. Giving up is not an option for this man – a quality seen early on by his scout leader who couldn’t stop him from trying to fix a broken tent while everyone else had given up. 4 hours later the 8 year old boy repaired it and gave them shelter for the night. Over the last 2 decades Matthew has completed a host of long distance events including; marathons, triathlons, a 2 day non-stop canoe race and open water swims. Matthew believes that anything is possible with a challenging goal and a heap of determination to reach it.
