In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

After graduating from Howard University, Desireé worked with Obama for America DC as Operations Coordinator and African Americans for Obama Outreach Coordinator. In these roles, she hired almost 100 new fellows for the fall fellowship, recruited volunteers for voter contact events, and helped send volunteers to win critical areas in Virginia to win the state's 13 electoral votes. She also served as an executive assistant at the Georgetown Law Domestic Violence and International Women's Human Rights Clinics, planning a fact-finding trip to Tanzania for 13 students, faculty, and staff members.
