In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized (subject to certain rules and regulations).

It all came to a halt with the failed 1991 coup against Mikhail Gorbachev that Nikolai predicted as early as December 1990. He broke through the glass wall between vernacular services and Newsgathering in 2001 to become a BBC News correspondent in Moscow, where he reported on hostage crises, the bewildering Yukos saga, and the shocking self-destruction of the pro-Western opposition to President Putin in the 2003-2004 elections. From 2004 to 2013 Nikolai ran media monitoring operations for the BBC across Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the Balkans. His analysis of the public mood in Crimea completed in 2009 proved to be correct in March last year.
