Theme: Redefining Normal

During the course of our lives, what we consider to be normal changes as our lives evolve. Our personal interests change as do our responsibilities. What was considered normal 20, even 10 years ago, is not the same as what is consider normal today. These same shifts also occur in society, and we are witnesses to some of those changes now. Previously the world was made up of separate countries focused on its own welfare. Now we see the world as a global community, what happens in other parts of the world is no longer constrained by geography, especially with the development of advanced technology. Many of the things we strive for today are no longer as much about individual success but rather about what and how we can give back. TEDxUCDavisSF is bringing a great collaboration of speakers, spanning across multiple continents, who are helping shape this new normal. The theme “Redefining Normal” looks to how we, as a society, can make this world a better place for current and future generations.

Funkanometery SF

Funkanometry was founded in 2002 by Emerson Aquino and Kyle Wai Lin, when they saw a need for quality training, accessible dance classes, and youth mentorship in the Bay Area. For over 10 years the organization was run by talented volunteers and staff, namely former Executive Director and current Board President, Gina Mariko Rosales. Over that time, Funkanometry SF won numerous awards recognizing their leadership in the field of urban dance including the prized GOLDIE Award (Guardian Outstanding Local Discovery) by the SF Bay Guardian newspaper. The organization’s recognized programs include youth company Funksters, Funks SF Company Class, Funks First Sundays and it’s flagship community event, The Sockhop.

Arum loves being in the consumer space. She has experience working at Avon Products as well as Amazon, leading efforts to understand consumer needs and behavior to deliver superior product experiences. After graduating from Harvard Business School, Arum is excited to start a business that leverages technology to bring something truly valuable to consumers.

Bruce Campbell

Bruce Campbell Jr., Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Leadership for Educational Equity and Excellence at Arcadia University in suburban Philadelphia. He is also the Director of the Educational Leadership Masters and Supervisory Certification programs. Dr. Campbell holds a doctorate in Educational Leadership and Learning Technologies from Drexel University and a master degree in Urban Education from Temple University. Prior to coming to Arcadia University, his career focused on school improvement and program evaluation. As a “Distinguished Educator” for the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Dr. Campbell consulted with school districts in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Dr. Campbell has also worked at education research firms and non-profit organizations including Research For Better Schools, and the Philadelphia Education Fund.

Daniel Murariu

Daniel Murariu has been working in his native Romania via a non for profit he started in 2006 providing scholarships to financially needy rural students, assisting schools in Prisacani Commune, Iasi County where his grandfather was principal and organizing medical missions with teams from his alma mater, Tulane University, and Grigore T. Popa University of Medicine and Pharmacy from Iasi, Romania. A Honolulu Sunset Rotary Club member since 2011, he has been awarded the 2012 Jerry C. Chang Peacemaker Award for District 5000 as well as a Hawai’i State of Representatives Proclamation for his local and international volunteer efforts. Daniel is a board certified general surgeon currently specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery at University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA.

Dawoon Kang

After wandering around for years trying to find her passion, Dawoon is happy to be finally working on a matter close to her heart, with & for people she loves! Prior to CMB, she lived & worked in Korea, Japan, New York, India & Hong Kong, in a variety of roles that spanned from strategy & business development, marketing, research to investing/finance. She is a proud graduate of Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Doy Charnsupharindr

Doy Charnsupharindr is a faculty member at UC Davis School of Management and UC Berkeley’s Haas Business School, teaching MBA-level courses on leadership, communication and presentation skills. He guest lectures at business schools in Asia and Europe, and also conducts workshops for leading high technology, consulting, and financial services firms, and non-profit and governmental organizations around the world. Doy is a certified executive coach and the CEO of the Berkeley Executive Coaching Institute. Doy’s goal as a coach and instructor is to be the catalyst for others to discover their full potential as an authentic leader and inspirational communicator. When coaching and training professionals, he draws upon his own experiences as a business strategist, a product manager, and a director in operations overseeing global teams in the financial services and high-tech industry.

Elaine Fraser

Elaine Fraser, author of Beautiful: beauty tips for the soul and Too Beautiful: more beauty tips for the soul is from Perth, Western Australia. After many years of teaching English and Drama in secondary schools, she now spends her time writing and travelling the world. Although Elaine was best known for her non-fiction work, she has branched out into inspirational fiction. She has published two young adult novels in the Beautiful Lives series: Perfect Mercy and Love, Justice. The third book, Amazing Grace is due out in 2015. Elaine is passionate about serving others and has volunteered in various capacities – as a youth leader, drama coach, events management and, most recently, in the Riverview Children’s Foundation. Since 2005, Elaine has worked as an education consultant for Transform Cambodia, as a coordinator of training programs for Khmer teachers. Elaine blogs at www.elainefraser.co.

Jim Ethington

Jim Ethington technologist and entrepreneur with 15 years of experience building data analytics and machine learning products in domains ranging from finance to sports simulation games. For the last 6 years, Jim has been focused on the problem of how we can apply data science to farming. As the VP of Product at The Climate Corporation, he leads product design and development for a suite of products that provide insights and recommendations to farmers that help them to grow crops more efficiently and effectively. He has an A.B. in Computer Science and Economics from Duke University.

Joshua Toch

At the age of 15 Toch started to take a stance against bullying in his own community by speaking up about his personal experiences of getting bullied because of his disability, Cerebral Palsy. Through witnessing the impact of his activism, Toch along with a team of other young entrepreneurial innovators, founded an organization by the name of Mind Before Mouth that equips students to better deal with the social aspects of life. mindbeforemouth.org (MBM) is a not-for-profit organization that goes into schools, clubs and organizations, in order to shed light on the fact that we all go through adversities in life and by working together we can strategically get through times of hardship.

Kausik Rajgopal

Kausik Rajgopal is a Director at McKinsey and leads McKinsey’s Silicon Valley office. He co-leads McKinsey’s Payments Practice, and formerly led the West Coast Organization and Change Management Practice. Since joining McKinsey in 1997, Kausik has served companies, governments, foundations and NGOs address strategy, operations, marketing, and organization issues. His recent engagements have included development of mobile payments and digital wallet roadmaps, definition of next-generation ‘order management’ mobile experiences, data utilization and monetization strategies, and e and m-commerce business models for the future. Kausik convenes McKinsey’s Emerging Payments Forum, which brings together well-established players, disruptors and investors for discussions on the future of Digital Payments and Commerce. He holds a patent on expedited electronic payments processing.

Kevin Berthia

Kevin Berthia is a grateful suicide survivor and suicide prevention advocate. Kevin was born with a genetic major depression disorder that he inherited from his biological mother. In 2005 at the age of 22, Kevin attempted to take his own life by jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge. After jumping the railing, he stood on a 4 inch narrow cord about 220 feet in the air. For 96 minutes, with nothing to stop him from falling except a listening ear, Kevin spoke with a first responder who eventually talked him back over the railing.

Kim Thiboldeaux

Kim Thiboldeaux joined The Wellness Community in 2000 as President and CEO. In 2009, the headquarter offices of The Wellness Community and Gilda’s Club joined forces to become the Cancer Support Community, one of the largest providers of social and emotional support worldwide, where Kim has maintained her role as CEO. The combined organization is the largest employer of psychosocial oncology mental health professionals in North America, advancing the idea that psychosocial care is as important as medical care in the face of a cancer diagnosis. The Cancer Support Community provides social and emotional support through a network of more than 50 local affiliates, more than 100 satellite locations and online at www.cancersupportcommunity.org. The organization also maintains a Research & Training Institute in Philadelphia and a Cancer Policy Institute in Washington, D.C.

Michael Stowe

Michael Stowe lives and breathes creativity, from being a published author since the age of 12 to acting on the big screen. When he’s not in front of the camera or lost in his writings, you’ll find him writing code as a software engineer or working on one of his presentations for conferences throughout the country. Having experience in medicine, law enforcement, and of course the cubical run office, Michael has seen a wide variety of settings, and run into some of the most creative people on earth- while also experiencing rigid superiors that looked down on his sporadic and out of the box approach. It was this breakdown in communication that drove Michael to want to better understand the psychology of it all, and to work to find a way to help people embrace the unique personalities of their peers- while also showing that embracing creativity doesn’t have to be dangerous for the workplace. Michelle Horan

Michelle Horan is the co-founder and Director of Business Development at P3 Sustainability Consulting. Throughout her career she has also worked in supply chain management, B2B sales and client management for public companies. As an eternal problem solver, Michelle’s expertise is building relationships, influential communication and coaching others towards success. The daughter of a fighter pilot, Michelle had a unique upbringing. By the age of 21 she had traveled to 23 countries and lived in 8 places in the US and abroad. This sparked a lifelong passion to explore the unfamiliar, unusual, and ever changing. In her free time, Michelle works to end sex trafficking and volunteers as a suicide and crisis counselor. Sachin Shah

Sachin A. Shah, Pharm.D. is a faculty member at University of the Pacific, Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and an instructor/clinical researcher at David Grant United States Air Force Medical Center. He is passionate about making transformational improvements in healthcare by emphasizing on research to target safe and efficacious use of drugs, devices, and dietary supplements in the areas of cardiovascular and lifestyle science. He resides in Northern California pursuing his interests and entrepreneurial spirit to bolster an integrative and holistic approach to medicine and human health. He has authored several book-chapters and publications some of which have been cited by media outlets like BBC News, USA Today, Fox News and Bloomberg. He enjoys being engaged in non-profit organizations such as the American Heart Association and BAPS Charities.

Sonia Hunt

Sonia Hunt is the CEO of Noie Media LLC, an interactive agency creating mobile products for luxury clients in Food & Wine, Lifestyle & Entertainment, Retail and Consumer Electronics verticals. She is also the creator of a Healthy Living Lifestyle brand whose mantra is to ‘Stay Safe, Live Healthy and Eat Well™’ when living with dietary restrictions such as food allergies.

Steve Fraser

In early 2000, Steve Fraser decided to leave his position as director and part owner of Australia’s seventh largest private company, to follow his passion into photography and adventure. Steve’s photography work has since been published in books, print and electronic media as well as being used in major advertising campaigns. Steve has also authored three books: Moments In The Light, Inspirational Moments and The Wild Frontier: Western Australia and has collaborated on several others including Vision of Hope and Focus on Australia. In a recent issue of Australian Geographic, Steve was described as: A master of light and composition who is one of the Australia’s foremost landscape photographers. Steve has a spirit of adventure and the desire to share some of the world’s incredible locations with others.
