You are cordially invited to the next TEDxTheHague salon! Our September edition — Let's Fall Through the Cracks of our Concrete World! — is curated by Johan Olie and Julie Scott. Johan writes:

"Friday the 13th at TEDxTheHague offers much more than the thrill of watching a scary movie. For us, Friday the 13th can remind us of an older, mythical world that seems all but lost to us. We invite you to meet us at this ill-fated day, and join us when we deliberately fall through the cracks of our concrete world.

Our modern world laid a fine pavement under our trembling feet, covering up all those superstitious beliefs that troubled us once. So now we live in a scientific, rational world, without divine purpose we can see.

At the same time "Spirituality" is very much alive in our world, offering answers to the question: how should we live? In India, the mythical view of the world is strong, in a confusing mixture with modernity. And in many corners of the world, ancient rituals are performed, saving our world day and day again.

How does modernity, how does science react to the mythical, when it pops up?
And more importantly: how do you relate to it, in your modern life?"

TED-talks in which we can experience the mythical:

Devdutt Pattanaik: East vs West - the myths that Mystify
Devdutt Pattanaik takes an eye-opening look at the myths of India and of the West — and shows how these two fundamentally different sets of beliefs about God, death and heaven help us consistently misunderstand one another.

Wade Davis: the worldwide web of belief and ritual
Anthropologist Wade Davis muses on the worldwide web of belief and ritual that makes us human. He shares breathtaking photos and stories of the Elder Brothers, a group of Sierra Nevada indians whose spiritual practice holds the world in balance.

And some modern responses to the mythical:

David Deutsch: A new way to explain explanation
Dan Dennet: Responding to Pastor Rick Warren
Alain de Botton: Atheism 2.0

We will not show all three, but certainly a part of the last one.
